I first set foot in La Ventana back in 2017, and though I’ve never joined the wind-sport club/cult, this place has captured my heart. It’s a town that pulses with the energy of Kitesurfers, Windsurfers, and Wing Foilers, and yet it offers so much more than just its famous winds. As someone who’s not tethered to a kite, I’ve spent a bit of time researching the hidden gems and off-the-windy-path activities that make this Baja California town a destination worth returning to—again and again.
This post is for all the "wind widows" out there: partners, friends, or family who love someone devoted to chasing gusts and waves. If you’ve ever hesitated to tag along on a trip here because you don’t partake in the wind sports, or if you’re a kiter trying to convince your other half to join you, rest assured—there’s plenty to do. From serene beaches and desert adventures to unique local experiences, La Ventana welcomes everyone, wind or no wind.
Whether you’re looking for relaxation, exploration, or a little of both, here are 20 OTHER ways to make the most of La Ventana.
1. Beachcombing and Sunbathing
La Ventana’s beaches are more than a place to catch the wind; they’re a playground for discovery. Spend hours beachcombing for sea glass, shells, and hidden treasures left behind by the tides. Each piece of sea glass tells a story, smoothed by the waves and polished by time.
If you love exploring Baja’s coastline, you might also enjoy Playa Pichilingue, a stunning and lesser-known beach near La Paz.
As the day melts into evening, the beaches transform into a canvas of colors—fiery oranges, delicate pinks, and deep purples. There’s no better place to stretch out on warm sands, let the stress melt away, and watch the sky light up in a kaleidoscope of sunset hues.
2. Hiking and Nature Walks
Explore La Ventana’s cactus-dotted trails, where every path is an invitation to adventure. The desert offers a rugged beauty that contrasts with the coastline’s serenity. Tall, spindly cacti stand guard, while wildflowers add bursts of unexpected color.
For first-time explorers, the Trailforks app is essential. It helps you navigate paths tailored for hiking or biking, ensuring you won’t miss hidden viewpoints or natural landmarks. Getting lost in the Cactus fields is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Take a Bark for Baja rescue dog with you!
